Paying Homage | Skillets Café

Skillets Café on Hilton Head Island

One More Time for HHI!

This will be our last (probably) review from Hilton Head but as many times as we have enjoyed this place in simply couldn’t go mentioned! I’ve mentioned several times here that our family goes to Hilton Head often. We make an exclusive trip every summer in which we try to bike everywhere we eat within reasonable distance from where we are staying. Skillets was one of the first places we found on the island and we have been going there for as long as I can remember!

They are in Coligny Plaza where people walk, bike, drive, and slosh up in swimming gear from the beach to eat. You won’t see fancy new menu items or fine dining entrees but they truly have some of the best food on the island that I have looked forward to every year without fail. And as far as coffee goes… my review may surprise you.

Best Black Coffee in the World

As you would expect at a small island cafe, you won’t find fancy lattes and macchiatos here but what they have is on a whole different level. I have been drinking their coffee since I was little with no fancy additives (except a healthy dose of cream and sugar) and to this day I instantly know the smell. For a while I would only drink iced drinks or drinks I made at home but a few years ago I went back and started getting Skillets coffee black. I can reasonably say it is the first black coffee I ever liked and confidently declare it the best black coffee to my knowledge.

May be the nostalgia but Skillets coffee just tastes exactly like coffee should taste. It is chocolaty but with just enough acidity to stay in your mouth - which basically just means it is not bitter and watered down. It is bold but it doesn’t dry your mouth out, smooth but not sour like some coffee can tend to lean. I got my first Skillets latte this time after seeing it on the menu for the first time (their menu hasn’t changed much in years to my knowledge so it was probably just due to me not paying attention before) and it was divine. Not sweet but foamy and with that perfect coffee flavor. If you can’t tell already, if the glass had extended the offer I would have married that coffee. Whereas normally it takes me all day to drink a latte (I like to savor it), this one took all of 30 minutes.

Time-tested Menu

Skillets food is a staple I have been consuming for as long as I have been going there for the past 10ish years. They have amazing bananas foster waffles and blueberry pancakes along with great breakfast plates with the infallibility well cook eggs and exemplary rosemary potatoes. I am an orthodox member of the savory crepe society, at least in when it comes to Skillets, so my order is always the same. Their savory crepe is called the Country Crepe and it contains sausage, eggs, rosemary, goodness, wonderfulness, magicalness and hollandaise sauce. You know how I mentioned my favorite food earlier? That is it. I wish I could give a more apt description of it but ai honestly don’t know what they put in their Country Crepe to make it taste like that. There is nothing else that can quite match that flavor or fill that craving for a hearty island breakfast of the country crepe. With a coffee and glass of water, you’ve successfully made the equation to make me the happiest girl alive.

Skillets Has My Heart!

Overall, Skillets has the most family (and dog) friendly environment imaginable, with a menu for dogs and top notch service every time. The waitresses and waiters there have always been fun to talk to and kind and that goes for the rest of the staff. This isn’t one of our eccentric latte destinations but it is more than worth stopping for to experience what they have to offer! Skillets has my heart!
